Documenting Africa's Biodiversity and
the role of Natural History Collections
The present volume is the result of a hitherto unprece-
dented collective effort of zoologists from Kenya and
Germany, who cooperated to promote inventorying
and protection of East African biodiversity. With finan-
cial support of the German Federal Ministry for Edu-
cation and Research, participants of the BIOTA East
Africa project were able to document the condition of
Kakamega forest, to inventory part of its flora and fau-
na, to understand the socioeconomic factors that lead
to deforestation, and to improve the infrastructure at
the collections of the National Museums of Kenya in
Nairobi. These collections are the largest for East Africa
and result from a long tradition of faunistic and floris-
tic field work. The result of this effort is the implemen-
tation of an IT infrastructure for the administration of
large collections, a faster access to collection data, the
chance to produce e.g. lists sorted by taxa or by local-
ities, or to publish online the holdings of the collec-
tions to make them better known and accessible to re-
searchers abroad.
Natural History Collections are the basis for any re-
search dedicated to species diversity. These collections
contain the evidence for the existence of a species in
space and time. The relevance of this type of data has
grown enormously since we became aware of the
large-scale changes of the biosphere caused by human
activities, which threaten the survival of national bio-
logical treasures. Collections are also essential for ba-
sic taxonomic research. Any taxonomist who wants to
describe new species of grasshoppers from East Africa,
for example, has the chance to compare new materi-
al with species kept in the important collections of the
National Museums of Kenya. Holotypes are especially
relevant. They document the characters that define a
species and the morphotype of the species that exist-
ed in the type locality. Today collections are also used
for inventorying at genetic level (e.g. for DNA-barcod-
ing).
The present volume is in this context a very useful
catalogue that can be consulted before you visit the
collections or ask for loans. It covers the taxa Pisces,
Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, Araneae, the major orders of
insects, and provides in addition checklists for the fau-
na of Budongo Forest (Uganda) and Kakamega Forest
(Kenya).
Most of the work has been done by the staff at the
National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi. The leading sci-
entist on the German side was Dr. Karl-Heinz Lampe,
who got strongly involved to advance the digitization
of existing collections in Nairobi and to train the staff
working in collections. He was before responsible for
the specimen-based database of Museum Koenig in
Bonn and he wanted to transfer his knowledge to the
collections in Kenya. He convinced the German Fed-
eral Ministry for Education and Research that an invest-
ment in biodiversity databases has lasting effects. Dr.
Lampe sadly died before he could finish his work. We
are happy that the catalogue can be published now.
His effort was not in vain.
