A New Odontoglossum from Nicaragua
ALFONSO H. HELLER
ASSOCIATE, FIELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
The genus Odontoglossum is not a large one in Central America
and in Nicaragua. I have recorded only two other species, 0. krameri
Reichb. f. and 0. oerstedii Reichb. f. Other species are to be expected
here as exploration continues.
Odontoglossum subcruciforme Heller
Herbae epiphyticae. Pseudobulbi ovati, compresati, bi- (uni-?)- foliati; folia
ligulata, emarginata, obtusa, subcoriacea, basi conduplicati et leviter angustati;
inflorescentia racema pauciflora e basi pseudobulbi; flores pedicellati; sepalum
dorsale oblanceolatum, acutum; sepala lateralia anguste-lanceolata, acuta vel
acuminata; petala elliptico-lanceolata acuminata, breviter unguiculata; labellum
trilobatum, subcruciforme, lobi laterales rotundati lobus medianus oblongo-ovatus,
acutus; columna brevis, erecta, auriculato-dentata.
Epiphytic herbs, the pseudobulbs borne proximately on a short rhizome,
ovoid, compressed, with two prominent ridges on each side, about 6 cm. long and
3.5 cm. broad, pseudobulbs subtended by a basal sheath and by two unequal
cataphylls, the outer one smaller, the inner one to 10 cm. long and similar to a
normal leaf; leaves one or two from the apex of the pseudobulbs, ligulate, emar-
ginate, obtuse, subcoriaceous, conduplicate and somewhat narrowed to the base,
about 15 cm. long and 2.5 cm. broad; inflorescence a few-flowered raceme borne
from the base of the pseudobulbs, up to about 45 cm. long, the basal portion with
internodes 4-5 cm. long and each with a closely appressed sheath about 1 cm.
long; flowers pedicellate, about seven, the pedicels slender, about 2 cm. long,
subtending bracts cucullate, ovate, about 4 mm. long; dorsal sepal oblanceolate,
acute, about 1.6 cm. long and 0.5 mm. broad; lateral sepals narrowly lanceolate,
acute or acuminate, slightly contracted to a claw-like base, about 2.2 cm. long and
0.4-0.5 cm. broad; petals obliquely elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, short ungui-
culate at the base, about 1.6 cm. long and 0.5-0.6 cm. broad; lip trilobate, some-
what cruciform, about 1.8 cm. long and 1.2 mm. broad across the lateral lobes, the
two prominent auriculate lateral lobes below the middle, rounded, the mid-lobe
oblong-ovate, acute, about 9 mm. long and 7 mm. broad, disc with a rounded,
sulcate, pubescent callus on the claw of the lip, provided with a pair of central
keels each with a lateral horn-like process on the outer side, the callus about 1
cm. long; column short, stout, erect, auriculate-dentate on each side opposite base
of stigma; ovary elongating in fruit.

HELLER: NEW ODONTOGLOSSUM 75
Nicaragua: epiphyte, flowers brown maculate, Yali, Dept. Jino-
tega, alt. 1,100 m., Feb. 1968, flowered in cultivation May 1968,
Heller 11305 (type,1/).
This species has the habit of Odontoglossum stenoglossum (Schltr.)
L. Wms. and 0. pauciflorum L. Wms., but the structure of the flowers
more nearly resembles that of 0. schlieperianum Reichb. f. and the
coloring that of 0. maculatum Llave & Lex.
The illustration was prepared in Nicaragua from living material,
the enlarged flower and lip drawn by Miss Davida Simon from
preserved materials.
