General. This subspecies was described from the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, Tuolumne County, Yosemite
National Park, along a four mile area of the Pate Valley Trail (Opler & Powell, 1961). Records are from mid-July
to September. It is likely that this metalmark occurs elsewhere in the region on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada
where suitable buckwheat hosts grow. An old record from Yosemite Valley for virgulti (Behr) (in Opler & Powell,
1961) may apply to tuolumnensis.

The Taxonomic Report
OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEPIDOPTERA SURVEY
THE YOSEMITE BUTTERFLIES (TEXT): SUPPLEMENT OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION,
COLLECTIONS AND CORRECTIONS FOR VOLUME 5, NO. 1.
The
(2005) in his coverage of Oregon/Great Basin populations of this species raised questions about
populations are also isolated from the Rocky Mountains indra with recently described phyllisae in the southern Sierra
and shastensis J. Emmel & T. Emmel from northern California. Other subspecies in the Great Basin have either been
described or will be in the near future.
Papilio eurymedon eurymedon.
Paul Opler notes that there is geographic variation within the species. Coast Range populations in the state show
some differences. Since the TL (Emmel, Emmel & Mattoon, 1998j) is in the Sierra Nevada, Yosemite populations
would represent the nominotypical subspecies.
Co lias alexandra edwardsii.
James Scott, Steve Kohler and Michael S. Fisher (2006) proposed that edwardsii is a different species than Colias
alexandra W. H. Edwards. No change is made herein pending further evaluation of that issue.
Lycaena cuprea lapidicola.
The correct subspecies name has proven to be controversial. See Warren (2005) and Scott (2006).
Atlides halesus estesi.
The subspecies name corcorani dos Passos is now used.
Satyrium fuliginosa maculadistinctum in the Yosemite region is now Satyrium semiluna maculadistinctum.
This change is made based on the work of Paul Opler and Andrew Warren (Warren, 2005) and recognized as such by
COSEWIC (2006).
Loranthomitoura spinetorum is now Cisincisalia spinetorum and Loranthomitoura johnsoni is now Cisincisalia
johnsoni.
The genus name was updated. Others place both in the genus Callophrys.
Euphilotes battoides glaucon and australoglaucon are now Euphilotes glaucon subspecies.
See Warren (2005) for discussion. This revision was anticipated in the Yosemite first edition.
Glaucopsyche piasus excubitus=excubita.
Both names were given in the original description. The correct spelling is excubita.
Plebejus (Icaricia) lupini (Eastern Sierra population) now includes: P. lupini goodpasturei.
Including goodpasturei in the region was not based on revisions since 1998. It is based on evaluating additional
collections in that region. Blend zone populations occur commonly in the region.
Speyeria zerene near zerene is now Speyeria zerene monticola.
Reasons for the change were discussed in the first edition. John Emmel now favors the recognition of monticola as
different from nominotypical zerene (pers. comm.).
Adelpha (bredowii) californica is now Adelpha californica.
Warren (2005) recognized Adelpha calif ornica as a species different than bredowii Geyer or eulalia (Doubleday).
Other supporting work by Prudic & Warren is in preparation.
Oeneis chryxus Stanislaus and ivallda
James A. Scott (2006) recognized two species in chryxus (Doubleday & Hewitson) and proposed that Stanislaus and
ivallda are subspecies of Oeneis Calais (Scudder). No change is made herein pending further evaluation of that issue.

RECENTLY ADDED BUTTERFLIES TO THE YOSEMITE REGION
LYSIDE SULPHUR Kricogonia lyside (Godart)
General: John F. Emmel reports that there is a record of three strays taken in the Mono Lake Basin E of the Sierra
Nevada. The specimens are in his private collection but the collection data and collector information were separated
from the specimens and lost. Thomas C. Emmel verified the locality information with the collector (name now
unknown).
SUPERPERPLEXING HAIRSTREAK Callophrys perplexa superperplexa (Emmel, Emmel & Mattoon).
Taxonomic note: The TL is Big Pine Creek, Inyo County, California. Recently described in the Systematics of
Western North America publication (1998h). This subspecies is characterized by having a prominent postmedian
macular band on the HW below in most individuals, though obsolecent in some individuals. This taxon can resemble
Callophrys comstocki and occurs close to or even with Callophrys lemherti populations on the Sierra Nevada E
slope. Emmel, Emmel & Mattoon recognized the questionable status of superperplexa but linked it with perplexa
based on a contiguous cline with perplexa to the south and the shared Eriogonum fasciculatum hostplant used by
many southern Sierra Nevada C. perplexa populations.
General: The northern limit of this subspecies was believed to be Bishop Creek (Inyo County) about 12 miles N of
Big Pine Creek but Jim Brock collected a larva at Lower Rock Creek (May 24, 2000 on Eriogonum kennedyi ) in
Mono County and reared it to an adult (emerged March, 2001). Adults likely fly from late March into early May.
DESERT MOUNTAINS AZURE Celastrina echo (W. H. Edwards). Desert mountains/eastem Sierra Nevada
segregate.
Taxonomic note: The actual separation of Celastrina echo as a separate species from ladon was by Guppy &
Shephard in 2001. Eastern Sierra Nevada and Mojave Desert populations were long known as “near cinerea ” (W. H.
Edwards) in previous checklists for the state but the actual taxonomic status of these Celastrina is unresolved.
Currently, most workers treat this segregate as a Celastrina echo because of the questionable and unstudied status of
the azures in the West, including cinerea which may not actually occur in the state.
General: This segregate was known to occur north to Pine Creek Canyon in Inyo County but recently was found in
Lower Rock Creek Canyon, Hot Creek and in the Bodie Hills near Bridgeport Canyon in Mono County. No doubt,
others have seen it in those localities but failed to recognize the significance.
DOTTED BLUE Euphilotes enoptes “ aridorum” Austin.
Taxonomic note: The TL is “Nevada: Washoe County, Peavine Peak Road at US 395, 1646m T20N R19E S7 on
USGS Verdi, Nev. 7.5 quadrangle.” John Emmel and Gordon Pratt state (pers. comm.) that Yosemite enoptes
populations on Eriogonum elatum differ (males are much lighter dorsally) from Nevada aridorum or are questionably
distinct from E. enoptes populations on Eriogonum nudum.
General: It is questionable if aridorum occurs in California. E. enoptes recently found by Paul Opler and Evi
Buckner near the Mammoth airport on July 4 and 5, 2006 may be this taxa because of visual similarities to aridorum
and the association with Eriogonum aridorum , the host aridorum is named after. The flight is in July and possibly
early August.
GOODPASTURE’S (LUPINE) BLUE Plebejus lupini goodpasturei Austin.
Taxonomic note: Treated as an undescribed eastern Sierra Nevada population in the first edition ( Yosemite
Butterflies, Text). Collecting since 2004 has shown that populations in the Bodie Hills are fairly typical goodpasturei
(females are mostly brown above per John F. Emmel, pers. comm.)) and the Glass Mountain area populations from
McGee Canyon and Taylor Springs are similar. Populations from the E Sierra Nevada from Mono Lake south have
females with more blue on the upper surface, apparently blending with intermediate populations in the southern
Sierra. The eastern Sierra population overlaps ranges with P. lupini alpicola at Warren Creek 8500’ off the Tioga
Road. Further collecting and study may show that two species in the lupini complex are involved in Mono County.

E. anicia wheeled from Tom’s Place though others have reported it there. Under E. chalcedona olancha. John
Pasko’s record from Owens River Gorge is actually Owens Gorge Rd. E. of Tom’s Place.
Satydum fuliginosa (=semiluna) maculadistinctum. Some or all records from the Minaret Summit area reported
from Mono County may prove to be in Madera County.
Plebejus melissa paradoxa. Reported records from Upper Summers Canyon (Mono County) are incorrect. The
collected blues were all P. fddayi.
Plebejus icadoides. The record cited for this species from subalpine forest W of Saddlebag Lake 31 VII 04 (KD) is
likely ssp. full a, not ssp. icadoides.
Speyeda coronis (Eastern Sierra Nevada): Records of “coronis” from Obsidian Camp Rd. (=Little Walker River Rd.

066. SOUTHERN DOGFACE Zerene cesonia cesonia (Stoll).
Regional occurrence: Not recorded in 1963.
Taxonomic status: Unchanged from 1963.
General: A very rare stray to the region and state, probably reaching the Yosemite area only in years of favorable
rainfall in the southeastern California deserts. Several records are cited in the records section. It is far more common in
much of Arizona and Mexico.
067. CLOUDLESS SULPHUR Phoebis sennae marcellina (Cramer).
Regional occurrence: Not recorded in 1963
Taxonomic status: Unchanged from 1963.
General: Like the preceding species, this is a rare migrant or vagrant to the region and was unrecorded for Yosemite by
Garth & Tilden. There are several records from the west slope of the Sierra in the Yosemite region, many in 1992
which was a good influx year for this migrant from Arizona and Mexico. The species likely is entirely absent most
years, only reaching the region in favorable years with good rainfall out on the deserts and in Mexico. Several records
are cited in the records section.
068. DAINTY SULPHUR Nathalis iole Boisduval.
Regional occurrence: Recorded in 1963.
Taxonomic status: Unchanged from 1963.
General: Also known as the Dwarf Yellow. A rarity in the region where it occurs only as a vagrant from the deserts.
Garth & Tilden reported records from “Yosemite” and Warren Creek. Paul Thompson has a record from the junction of
Sonora Pass Rd. at Clark Fork Rd. at 5600’, Tuolumne Co. (June 27, 1992). James R. Mori has a record from nearby
Alpine County (see records section).
HAIRSTREAKS, COPPERS AND BLUES: LYCAENIDAE
These brightly colored butterflies are well represented in the Yosemite region (I recognize fifty-four species). A
number of rarely seen “coppers” and “blues” can be found in the high country. For many of the blues and hairstreaks, the
lepidopterist may need a good field guide to become familiar with “field marks” to correctly identify them.
069a. TAILED COPPER Lycaena (Tharsalea) arota arota (Boisduval).
Regional occurrence: Recorded in 1963.
Taxonomic status: Unchanged from 1963.
Taxonomic note: The TL was restricted to Hwy. 70 at Soda Creek, E. Branch of N. Fork of Feather River Canyon,
2500’ elev., Plumas County, California (J. Emmel, T. Emmel & Mattoon, 1998b).
General: This subspecies occurs locally (sometimes commonly) in the Upper Sonoran and Transition Zones on the
Sierra Nevada west slope in association with the hostplants ( Ribes =gooseberries). Adults can be seen visiting a variety
of flowers, including dogbane from late May into early August.
069b. NEVADA TAILED COPPER Lycaena arota virginiensis W. H. Edwards.
Regional occurrence: Recorded in 1963.
Taxonomic status: Unchanged from 1963.
Taxonomic note: The TL is Virginia City, Nevada (Miller & Brown, 1981).
General: This is the east slope subspecies found commonly in July and August at milkweeds and other flowers at
Mono Lake, the Bridgeport area and along the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada. The larval host is Ribes.
070. AMERICAN COPPER Lycaena (Lycaena) phlaeas alpestris J. Emmel & Pratt.
Regional occurrence: Recorded in 1963.
Taxonomic status: Changed from 1963.
Taxonomic note: Known as subspecies hypophlaeas (Boisduval) for many years, but that name is now known to apply
to populations which occur in the eastern U. S. The Arctic-Alpine populations of what has been considered a
subspecies of phlaeas in the California Sierra Nevada may actually be a separate sibling species. The TL for alpestris is
Mono County: north slope of Mt. Dana which is just east of the boundary of Yosemite National Park (J. Emmel & Pratt,
1998).
General: This is one of the most difficult and dangerous species to collect or observe in the region. It usually occurs
well above timberline in harsh habitats and terrain such as on steep talus slides, avalanche slopes and glacial cirques.
On one occasion while collecting this butterfly on a north facing slope south of Sonora Pass, I had to take refuge behind
a huge boulder while an avalanche of small to large rocks and boulders came down the mountain right at me.
Other populations occur above timberline bordering precipices. The best known localities are the north slope of Mt.
Dana, the slopes bordering Saddlebag Lake and the steep rocky slopes south above Sonora Pass, all in Mono County.
These rare Sierra Nevada colonies likely occur throughout most of the Arctic-Alpine Zone from Inyo County (it should
occur further south in Tulare Co.) north but the inaccessibility of the high country hinders their discovery. The flight

General: The Ruddy Copper is common in the Great Basin and along the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada. It is also
seen in sagebrush areas even above 9000' feU 0,000' eleven in the Tioga Pass region as at Warren Creek, Ellery Lake,
Bay (Sonoma and Marin Cos., California (J. Emmel & Pratt, 1998)). Published records prior to 1998 may be of little

spots on the ventralsurface. It occurs on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada from 4500’ to 10,100’ elevation with
several populations on the very crest of the Sierra Nevada (e.g. Saddlebag Lake, Mono County). It flies in a single
brood in July and August. The larval host is Eriogonum nudum. Both submaculata and the next subspecies occur
together at Warren Creek (east slope of the Sierra Nevada on Tioga Pass Rd.) on different hosts, suggesting the two may
be sibling species though J. Emmel & Pratt (1998) were reluctant to draw such conclusions.

Eriogonum umbellatum Torrey as the larvafhost. J. Emmel & Pratt (1998) applied the name “near klotsi Field” (TL:
Broadwater Co., Montana (Miller & Brown, 1981)) to this population but Andrew Warren has raised some issues
regarding the application of this name to this region (pers. comm.). Eastern Sierra Nevada material differs by having a

reduction to absence of the spotting pattern on the ventral hindwing of both sexes" (J. Emmel & Pratt, 1998). The name
klotsi was considered a synonym of nominotypical heteronea by Miller & Brown (1981).
General: There are also populations on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada south of the Sonora Pass Rd. (road from
Niagara Creek to Eagle Meadow; L. heteronea using E. umbellatum there as a larval host). The flight period is July and
August. This copper which resembles one of the “blues” is often very common in elevated sagebrush with the

INTRODUCTION
This compilation of butterfly illustrations for the Yosemite region is intended primarily as a supplement to the text
publication on Yosemite Butterflies (Davenport 2004 and Davenport 2007, second edition, currently in press).
Taxonomic interpretations and names follow these documents. Common names and authors of the scientific names
are given in the text publication. This color plates publication also functions as a stand-alone document for
naturalists and lepidopterists with need for reference illustrations only.
Creation of this publication was a team effort. Butterflies were selected from Ken Davenport’s private collection to
illustrate most species and subspecies for the Yosemite region. If good quality specimens were available from
within the region we often used those. Most of the photography was done by Charles Grisham. In other cases Jim
Brock, Howard Grisham, Norbert Kondla, Richard Meyer, John Pasko, Andrew Warren, Michael Leski and Crispin
Guppy provided needed specimens or photographs. Most of the illustrated specimens were photographed under
indirect natural light to maintain color fidelity. Most were also photographed using the ‘glass plate’ method to
produce shadow-free images. Digital cameras were used for all illustrations. Norbert Kondla edited the raw images
and assembled them into life size plate format. Paint Shop Pro was used for image editing and Microsoft Word was
used for plate assembly.
Many taxa (especially rare strays) were illustrated from butterflies taken outside the region. Since one goal of this
publication was to help others to identify and recognize the visual characters (eg. color, patterns, field marks) of the
different species and subspecies in the region, good quality specimens from outside the region were sometimes
chosen.
There are a few cases where positive identification of illustrated individuals ( Euphilotes battoides group and
Euphilotes ancilla ) can only be done by examining the genitalia. The two look very much alike and it was only
recently recognized that two species were involved. In a few cases, there were no specimens available in private
collections of those involved in this project to illustrate a taxon. For example, no one has collected Philotiella
speciosa bohartorum since 1970. We also lacked male Speyeria coronis and female Plebejus shasta calchas from
within the region. In addition, we did not have any of the distinctive yellow Papilio bairdii from eastern Mono
County to photograph. In such cases, we used another subspecies to illustrate the species or only illustrated one sex
of a taxon. There were yet other non-Yosemite specimens chosen to illustrate subspecies influences or variation
present within the Yosemite region. Including these taxa from outside the region should help the reader recognize
variation within the region and that butterflies do not always fit into neat taxonomic categories.
All 1016 illustrations are as close to life size as allowed by the technology used to create the plates and are in most
cases accurate to within one millimeter. Specimen localities given are mostly from within California. States are
listed only if the specimen was collected outside California. All specimens illustrated were collected by Ken
Davenport unless otherwise noted.

NAMES USED IN THIS PUBLICATION
Names follow those used in the revised Yosemite Butterflies Text. The names below have changed since
the first edition because of subsequent work or revisions. Explanations for those changes are given in the
revised Yosemite Butterflies Text or in the Supplement for the first edition of the Yosemite Butterflies Text.
1. Hesperopsis libya lena is now Hesperopsis libya (Great Basin).
2. Papilio indra indra is now Papilio indra (Central Sierra Nevada).
3. Atlides halesus estesi. The subspecies name corcorani is now used.
4. Satyrium fuliginosa in the Yosemite region is now Satyrium semiluna.
5. The genus name Loranthomitoura has been replaced by the name Cisincisalia for spinetorum and
johnsoni.
6. Euphilotes battoides glaucon and australoglaucon are now Euphilotes glaucon subspecies.
7. Glaucopsyche piasus excubitus=excubita.
8. Plebejus (Icaricia) lupini (Eastern Sierra population) is now P. lupini goodpasturei.
9. Speyeria zerene near zerene is now Speyeria zerene monticola.
10. Adelpha (bredowii) californica is now Adelpha californica.
Family divisions follow those used in the Yosemite Butterflies Text. Taxonomists sometimes place the
family Riodinidae under Lycaenidae. The families Libytheidae, Satyridae and Danaidae are often placed
within the family Nymphalidae as tribes (or subfamilies) by many taxonomists.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The author (Ken Davenport) of the Yosemite Butterflies Text (Volume 5, Numberl) could not have put
together the Color Plates issue without the considerable work done by Norbert Kondla, Howard Grisham
and Charles Grisham. For many taxa not readily available to the authors, Jim Brock, Richard P. Meyer,
John G. Pasko, Todd Stout, Andrew Warren, Michael Leski and Crispin Guppy provided their photographs
for this project. Andrew Warren and John F. Emmel were given drafts of written text (originally intended to
be included in the color plates issue) to review to assure accuracy and provide input on Yosemite butterflies
and continuing research. Their comments have now been incorporated into the Supplement for the
Yosemite Butterflies Text and in the revised edition of that publication. Paul Opler and James Scott also
shared new finds, communicated regarding names issues and research connected to Yosemite butterflies.
The International Lepidoptera Survey, Harry Pavulaan, Todd Stout, Howard Grisham and Alex Grkovich
were also very important in publishing this work and providing financial assistance for this project. Debbie
Davenport (Ken Davenport’s wife) also provided computer assistance for this project and final editing for
this publication.
