INTRODUCTION

The INDEX TO PLANT CHROMOSOME NUMBERS 1979-1981 is a continuation of

a series begun in 1956 by Marion S. Cave and colleagues at the University of California,

Berkeley. The last issue in the series was published in 1981 and covered the years 1975-

1978. The INDEX TO PLANT CHROMOSOMES NUMBERS Project moved to the

Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis in 1978 and it has been supported in part, since

then by the U. S. National Science Foundation. INDEXES prior to 1975 were published

m Regnum Vegetabile, the last of the INDEXES published here, covering 1973-74 was

published in 1975 in vol. 96 of this series. The most recent INDEX, covering 1975-1978

was published as vol. 3 of Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical

Garden.

This and future INDEXES will be be published in this Monograph series, but are

otherwise a continuation of the INDEX published in Regnum Vegetabile. Format and

the arrangement of major groups is for the most part identical to that in the last

INDEX (1975-78). Standardized family names ending in -aceae are used throughout, the

more traditional names such as Compositae, Labiatae, Palmae etc. being replaced by

their alternates, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Arecaceae etc. Genera are assigned to

families according to the Dalle Torre & Harms System for Seed Plants. Fungi, Algae

and Pteridophytes are arranged following the system in Engler <3c Prantl's Syllabus der

Pflanzenfamilien. The genera of Mosses have been arranged following Crosby <3c Magill,

A Dictionary of Mosses and the Liverworts according to an unpublished system prepared

by J.J. Engel.

During the assembly of the INDEX, I have tried to alter the published information

as little as possible but owing to space limitations data in the columns for gametic or

sporophytic counts have had to be shortened in a few cases and then most often 'etc.'

has been added to indicate that the report was more lengthy. Generic names have been

adjusted to exclude orthographic variants. Author citations have also been brought into

conformity with abbreviations suggested by D. Meikle, Draft Index of Author

Abbreviations Compiled at the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Titles Reviewed

The INDEX TO PLANT CHROMOSOME NUMBERS aims to extract and index

original plant chromosome numbers of naturally occurring and cultivated plants,

published throughout the world. A committee of voluntary reviewers located in various

parts of the world scan a set of journal titles assigned to them and return the

information to the editor for collation in the CHROMOSOME INDEX. We try to cover

as much of the botanical literature as possible and a list of the serial titles regularly

reviewed is appended to this Volume. Several additional titles are reviewed on an

irregular basis as they become available or are specifically brought to our attention. I

apologize for any inadvertent gaps in our coverage and I request readers who find any

serial titles likely to have chromosome data and not on our list to please bring them to

my attention. Every effort will be made to obtain these journals for review.

I would be pleased to receive information about literature of any kind that we do

not review, and will also be glad to accept reprints of journals or articles that need to

be reviewed for the CHROMOSOME INDEX. I ask readers to point out any deficiencies

in this INDEX so that corrections can be made, ensuring that future composite multi¬

year INDEXES will be more accurate.
