INTRODUCTION

The Index to Plant Chromosome Numbers 1984-1985 is a continuation

of a series begun in 1956 by Marion S. Cave and colleagues at the University of

California, Berkeley. The last issue, volume 13 of Monographs in Systematic

Botany from the Missouri Botanical Garden was published in 1985 and

covered the years 1982-1983. The IPCN project has been housed at the Missouri

Botanical Garden, St. Louis, since 1978 and is supported in part by the United

States National Science Foundation. Indexes prior to 1975 were published in

Regnum Vegetabile. The last of the Indexes published there, covering 1973-

1974, was published in 1975 as volume 96 of that series. Format and the ar¬

rangement of major groups is for the most part identical to that in the last Index

(1982-1983). Standardized family names ending in -aceae are used throughout,

the more traditional names such as Compositae, Labiatae, Palmae, etc. being

replaced by their alternates, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Arecaceae etc. Genera are

assigned to families according to Dalle Torre & Harms, Genera Siphonoga-

MARUM (1900-1907) except that the Coniferae are arranged according to the

classification of Dallimore & Jackson, revised by S. G. Harrison in A Handbook

OF Coniferae and Ginkgoaceae (1966). Pteridophyte genera are assigned to

families following J. A. Crabbe, A. C. Jermy & J. T. Mickel, “A new generic

sequence for the pteridophyte herbarium” (Fern Gaz. 11: 141-162. 1975). Fungi

and Algae follow the system in Engler’s Syllabus der Pflanzenfamilien (1954).

The genera of mosses have been arranged following M. R. Crosby & R. E. Magill,

A Dictionary of Mosses (1981). Liverworts are arranged according to an un¬

published system prepared by J. J. Engel.

During the assembly of the Index, I have tried to alter the published infor¬

mation as little as possible, but owing to space limitations, data in the columns

for gametic or sporophytic counts have sometimes had to be shortened in a few

cases and then most often “etc.” has been added to indicate that the original

report contained more data. Generic names have been adjusted to exclude or¬

thographic variants. Author citations have also largely been brought to conformity

with abbreviations suggested by D. Meikle, Draft Index of Author Abbrevi¬

ations (1984).

Titles Reviewed

The Index to Plant Chromosome Numbers aims to extract and index

original plant chromosome numbers of naturally occurring and cultivated plants

published throughout the world. A committee of voluntary contributors located

in various parts of the world reviews a set of journal titles assigned to them and

returns the information to the editor for collation in the Index. We try to cover

as much of the botanical literature as possible, and a list of the serial titles from

which counts were obtained is included as an Appendix to this Index. Additional

titles are reviewed, but unless they included original chromosome counts, they

are not listed. As many books are reviewed for counts as are brought to the

attention of the editor or contributors. I apolo^ze for any inadvertent gaps in our

coverage, and I request readers who find any serial titles likely to have chromosome

data and not on our list to please bring them to my attention. Every effort will

be made to obtain these journals for review. Coverage is intended to be as complete

as possible, and counts for past years will be added to any Index if they have not

been included before.
