INTRODUCTION
Index of Mosses, 1999-2001 (IOM 99-01), contains nova published between 1 January
1999 and 31 December 2001. In addition, nova that should have appeared in earlier Indexes
of Mosses and valid nova that should have appeared in Jndex Muscorum are included. Finally,
there are some corrections to the earlier Indexes of Mosses and Index Muscorum.
IOM 99-01 closely follows the style of the Index of Mosses, 1963-1989, which appeared
in 1992, and later triennial installments, Index of Mosses, 1990-1992 (1994), Index of Mosses
1993-1995 (1997), and Index of Mosses, 1996-1998 (2000); bibliographic details are
provided on the next page. Users should read their introductions for details about content and
at.
IOM 99-01 also lists authors of moss names and publications not listed in Index of
Mosses, 1963-1989, with a few entries duplicated, when additional information is available.
As with earlier Indexes of Mosses, IOM 99-01 is based on information contained in
MOST, a subset of the database TROPICOS, developed and maintained at the Missouri
Botanical Garden. /ndex of Mosses is a nomenclator: it does not reflect taxonomic
interpretations of acceptance or synonymy.
Nomenclatural interpretations are based on the St. Louis Code. We interpret thirteen of
the names published during the interim as invalid or illegitimate. Of these we feel that it is
worth noting that Latin descriptions or diagnoses (or reference to previously published Latin
descriptions or diagnoses) are required for names of all ranks, algae and fossils excepted,
published after January 1, 1935. See Sphagnophyta. The Code does not provide for the
simultaneous validation of multiple names by a single description except in the case of new
monotypic genera based on new species (Article 34.1(d), 41.1, 42). See Ambuchannia and
related entries.
The number of newly described species of mosses continues to decline, as mentioned in
IOM 96-98. Here are the numbers of species with valid, legitimate names published during
the last four, three-year intervals: 1990-1992, 132; 1993-1995, 116; 1996-1998, 102, 1999-
2001, 89. Similarly, the taxonomic literature indicates that the number of species of mosses
currently recognized continues to decline, as reflected in TROPICOS, from 13,062 in late
1997 to 12,537 in mid 2003. In mosses, there are more new synonyms to discover than new
species.
é Acknowledgments: We thank our muscological colleagues at MO, Bruce Allen, Steve
Churchill, Patricia Eckel, Si He, Bob Ireland, and Richard Zander. Others have helped by
sending reprints.
