Note On Gibsoniothamnus
ALWYN H. GENTRY
MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN
ST. Louis, MISSOURI
The species roughly intermediate between the Bignoniaceae and
the Scrophulariaceae continue to cause taxonomic headaches. Wil-
liams has proposed the genus Gibsoniothamnus to encompass several
species of this alliance which had been erroneously treated under
Verbenaceae. He correctly cites his new genus as a further link be-
tween the Scrophulariaceae and the enigmatic genus Schlegelia which
traditionally has been included in the Bignoniaceae. Unfortunately,
however, he overlooked the fact that Gibsoniothamnus pithecobius,
the type species of Gibsoniothamnus, is identical to Schlegelia cornuta
Donn.-Sm., based on a Heyde and Lux collection, number 3044,
from San Miguel Uspantan, Quiche", Guatemala.
